There are about 6,000 Warlipri people of whom 3,000 speak the Warlpiri language. Most Warlpiri are multilingual – speaking neighboring dialects like Jaru, Western Desert Language , Warumungu or English.
The Warlpiri are famous for their tribal dances and songs.
Warlpiris divide themselves into eight named groups that determine a persons rights and obligations. Within the groups is a complex system of subgroups based upon paternal and maternal lines. Traditionally spouses must be chosen from a particular subgroup and the Warlpiri disapprove of marriages that break this rule.
Some other customs – you should speak politely, don’t ask questions and don’t stare people in the eye (because it is considered to be rude).
With Dreamtime you’ll be able to experience Warlpiri culture up close.
